Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) has agreed to pay $1 billion to settle a lawsuit by the plaintiffs, alleging that Pfizer knew that certain drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction, including Viagra (sildenafil) and Cialis (tadalafil), were associated with the increased risk of heart attacks and strokes.
The case was brought in Philadelphia against Pfizer, the company that manufactures Viagra, Cialis, and other prescription drugs, and its parent company Eli Lilly & Co. (NYSE: LLY) and its affiliated drug maker. The complaint seeks to prevent the companies from making certain key drugs that cause erectile dysfunction to be used to treat other erectile dysfunction conditions.

Under the agreement, Teva is liable for all or a portion of the settlement amount, or if the settlement amount is less than the $1.1 billion in funds it is owed.
In a press release dated June 15, 2012, Pfizer stated that the amount of the settlement was $1 billion and the parties’ intent was to resolve the matter by agreeing to the settlement.
“Pfizer has continued to aggressively pursue and pursue claims in this litigation,” said James W.
